Lionel Elika Fatupaito, the esteemed coach of the Samoa boxing team, has tragically passed away at the Seine-Saint-Denis Olympic Village, as confirmed by the Bobigny prosecutor’s office.
According to police reports, the coach was with a boxer in a room at approximately 10:20 a.m. when he began to feel unwell. Emergency services at the Village responded swiftly but were unable to save his life. Preliminary reports from the IBA indicated that the cause of death was a heart attack. The investigation into this tragic incident is now in the hands of the Seine-Saint-Denis judicial police.
The International Boxing Association (IBA) issued a heartfelt statement expressing condolences over his sudden death. “We at the International Boxing Association (IBA) extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Lionel Elika Fatupaito,” the IBA’s statement read. “Lionel’s dedication and passion for the sport have left an indelible mark on the boxing community. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations. Our thoughts and prayers are with Team Samoa and all those affected by this great loss.”
Luafalealo Paige Talalelei, president of the Samoa Olympic Committee, also confirmed and mourned the coach’s death, recognizing him as one of the country’s leading coaches. Fatupaito was in Paris preparing boxer Tupuola Ato Plodzicki-Faoagali for the Olympic Games, scheduled to be held at the North Paris Arena and Roland Garros from July 27 to August 10.
