Despite being one of the deadliest snakes in the world, the two-headed viper can be vulnerable due to a genetic abnormality.
Newly discovered extremely poisonous Russell viper in India.
Known as one of the deadliest snakes in Asia, a Russell’s two-headed viper was recently discovered in India.
The snake was discovered by a local resident named Dimple Shah outside a mansion in Maharashtra, western India. Dimple Shah immediately called the local snake rescue force to rescue and the snake was taken to a specialized handling facility.
Despite being one of the deadliest snakes in the world, the two-headed Russell’s viper can be vulnerable in the wild due to a genetic abnormality. Each head, about 2cm long, will catch and eat its prey in a different way.
Two-headed snakes are rare and don’t usually last long in the wild. A rare genetic abnormality can interfere with their ability to catch prey. Snakes work well with their sense of smell, if one catches the scent of prey on the other’s head, it will even attack and try to swallow the second one’s head.
According to researchers at the University of Michigan (USA), Russell’s viper is one of the deadliest snakes in Asia, responsible for thousands of deaths each year.
If bitten by Russell’s viper, the victim will experience a range of symptoms from pain to vomiting, constant dizziness, then to kidney failure.
