Lamar Jackson’s Slimdown: How Weight Loss Is Changing the Game for the Ravens QB

Lamar Jackson finding a way to improve his play from last season is a daunting prospect for opposing defenses. The Baltimore Ravens quarterback has made strides in his physical conditioning, shedding approximately 10 pounds since last season and a total of 25 pounds since the 2022 season. Now weighing around 205 pounds, Jackson appears poised to bring an even greater level of dynamism to his game, with the potential to run more frequently and effectively this season.

Jackson has already noticed the benefits of his weight loss during training camp. “I’ve got a lot more energy. I’m not fatigued as much,” Jackson shared on Monday. “If I’m running 30 yards down the field, I can come back and just be like me, like a robot, even though I’m not a robot. I’m feeling good. I just feel better.”

Jackson’s speed and agility have always been a hallmark of his game, and last season, he became the fastest quarterback to reach 5,000 rushing yards, breaking Michael Vick’s record in 22 fewer games. In 2023, Jackson ran for 821 yards and scored five touchdowns, his highest totals since 2020.

While the weight loss could enhance Jackson’s speed and endurance, there are concerns about its potential impact on his durability. Jackson played a full season in 2023 for the first time since 2020, but lighter weight could increase the risk of injury. Jackson missed the final five games in both the 2021 and 2022 seasons, and while he was healthy for most of last year, his ability to stay on the field remains crucial to the Ravens’ success.

This season, Jackson may benefit from the addition of Derrick Henry, a former Offensive Player of the Year and arguably the best running back Jackson has played alongside. Henry’s presence could create more opportunities for Jackson in the running game, adding another dimension to Baltimore’s offense.

If Jackson can maintain his speed and agility at his lighter weight, he could elevate the Ravens’ offense to new heights. However, staying healthy will be key. The difference between a Super Bowl run and fighting for a playoff spot may well hinge on Jackson’s ability to remain on the field for the entire season.
