Manchester United have announced the appointment of Jose Mourinho as their new manager.
The 53-year-old succeeds Louis van Gaal at the helm of the 13-time BPL champions after agreeing a three-year deal, with an option to stay until at least 2020.
“To become Manchester United manager is a special honour in the game,” Mourinho told manutd.com. “It is a club known and admired throughout the world. There is a mystique and a romance about it which no other club can match.
“I have always felt an affinity with Old Trafford; it has hosted some important memories for me in my career and I have always enjoyed a rapport with the United fans. I’m looking forward to being their manager and enjoying their magnificent support in the coming years.”
Ed Woodward called Mourinho “quite simply the best manager in the game today”.
The United executive vice chairman added: “He has won trophies and inspired players in countries across Europe and, of course, he knows the Premier League very well, having won three titles here.”
Mourinho made a huge impact when he first took charge at Chelsea in 2004, winning the club’s first top-flight title in 50 years with a league-record 95 points.
In two spells at Chelsea, Mourinho won three BPL titles and lifted an FA Cup, a Community Shield and three League Cups.
He boasts the best win percentage (66%) and points-per-match win ratio (2.19) of any BPL manager, winning 140 of 212 English top-flight matches, drawing 44 and losing 28.
Mourinho will discover his first opponents as United manager in the 2016/17 Premier League at 9am on 15 June, when the fixtures for season are released on premierleague.com.
Before then, he will have summer friendlies against Borussia Dortmund, at Shanghai Stadium on 22 July, and Manchester City at the Bird’s Nest Stadium, Beijing, three days later.
