Manchester United supporters are hoping that the club‘s long–awaited summer transfer window will herald the arrival of one of the most sought–after midfielders in Europe – Frenkie de Jong. The Dutchman has been a target for the Red Devils since last year, but a deal was never agreed and the Barcelona star has now discussed the possibility of a move to Old Trafford.
De Jong was in action on Sunday as Barcelona beat their bitter rivals Real Madrid 2–1 at the Nou Camp. After the final whistle, De Jong was asked whether a move to United could be on the cards this summer, to which he responded: You never know, of course. He went on to add that he is “very happy“ at Barcelona and that his performances have been improving since he signed for the club.
United boss Erik ten Hag was keen to sign De Jong last summer but ultimately failed in his efforts. The Red Devils are now believed to be considering a renewed move for the 25–year–old, as well as a possible transfer for Borussia Dortmund and England youngster Jude Bellingham.
The club were also boosted on Sunday night as they came from behind to beat Fulham 3–1, booking their spot in the FA Cup semi–finals in the process. Two goals from Bruno Fernandes and another from Marcel Sabitzer helped down the Cottagers on Sunday to push the club towards more silverware, with another trip to Wembley now in the diary.
Ten Hag has already ended United‘s long trophy drought by picking up the Carabao Cup last month and the club are now looking to build on that success by signing more quality players. De Jong is seen as the ideal man to bolster United‘s midfield and the Dutchman has recently opened up about the possibility of a move.
The Barcelona star is understood to be keen to continue his childhood dream of playing at the Nou Camp, but United fans will be hoping that their club‘s interest in the midfielder is strong enough to persuade him to move to Old Trafford.
In the face of stiff competition from other clubs, United will be hoping that their long–term interest in De Jong and the prospect of working with Ten Hag will be enough to convince him to make the switch. Whether or not that will be the case remains to be seen, but United fans will be hoping that De Jong will be the next major signing to don the famous red shirt.
