In Sunday’s 2-2 draw with West Ham United, Arsenal once again took a 2-0 lead, as they did at Anfield last week. Goals from Said Benrahma and Jarrod Bowen dented the club’s title hopes in the process. In addition to conceding 2 goals, Arsenal also had to receive a broken penalty from Bukayo Saka in the second half.
The 20-year-old striker has been in excellent form throughout the season but has shown signs of slowing down in a number of recent matches. Against West Ham, Saka had a chance to give Arsenal a 3-1 lead after Michail Antonio let the ball touch his hand inside the box, but Saka missed the post.
After the match, Saka took to her personal Instagram account to apologize to Gunners fans for her mistake. He wrote: “Regardless of the outcome, I’ll always accept my responsibility.
Apologies Gunners, I’ll do everything I can to make it right.”
Saka’s manager Mikel Arteta is sure to back his star player after missing the penalty. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said, “A player who takes penalties will miss penalties, I don’t know anyone who doesn’t.”
Arsenal are currently four points ahead of reviving Manchester City, who have a game in hand and home advantage in the upcoming top-of-table clash between the two teams. With key players like Saka, Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Jesus all in fine form, the Gunners will be looking to ignore the penalty and focus on the upcoming match.
With the race to the championship heating up, the Gunners will be counting on Saka to correct his mistakes in the upcoming matches. His apology for missing the penalty is an indication of what kind of person he is, and if he can turn his regret into a positive performance on the pitch, then so be it. Arsenal could still have a chance to win the title.
