Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Celtic and Scotland striker called Rodri “an idiot” and said there was nothing wrong with the Scots’ playing style.
Scotland achieved a historic victory with a 2-0 win over Spain at Hampden in their Euro qualifier last week (28 March) and claimed their first win against the Spanish in 39 years.
The home side also ended Spain’s nine year unbeaten run in Euro qualifying.
As quoted by Sky Sports after the game, the Man City man and Spain captain slammed his opponents’ “rubbish” approach to the game.
Rodri complained about the Scots’ time-wasting with “four or five players on the floor” even though they were leading the game comfortably for most of the second half.
When asked what he made of Rodri’s comments, McAvennie told Football Insider: “He is an idiot. What a stupid statement.
“I know he is hurt but they were doing it as well. Their centre-forward was rolling about as if he was doing the worm in a nightclub.
“Rodri was just making a fool of himself, he was just like a petulant wee boy. They only started timewasting when they went 2-0 up, I can understand that. That was the game plan that Steve Clarke had.”
Rodri returned to club football for City on Saturday (1 April).
He was in the starting lineup for their 4-1 win over Liverpool where he came up against Scotland skipper Andy Robertson again.
