Canelo Alvarez Refuses To Fight The Ibf Mandatory Title Defense Match, Which Could Lead To Him Being Stripped Of His Super Middleweight Title

Canelo turns a deaf ear to IBF request to fight Scull for now
Saul Canelo Alvarez will fight William Scull if he feels like it, not because the International Boxing Federation (IBF) has designated the Cuban as the new mandatory opponent for the Mexican champions to keep his belt.

The Mexican boxer does not want to take orders from anyone, as he has already shown in previous occasions before the World Boxing Council (XMB) when they have placed David Benavidez as his mandatory opponent.

That fight has never happened because Canelo has chosen other options, always the ones that have interested him the most. And that is what he is going to do again.

“Since I don’t have social media on my phone, I haven’t seen that. Eddy told me something, but I have been busy with my VMC drink and now with the tournament. We haven’t delved into that topic, I’m going to talk it over with my work team and we’ll see what’s next,” Canelo stated casually on the occasion of the No Golf no Life tournament held at the Bosque Real club.

“As I’ve said, I’m in a position where I can do whatever I want.”

Scull is ranked No.1 by the IBF and was a former youth champion in Cuba, his professional career has been spent in Argentina and Germany.

The parties have 28 days to reach an agreement and then submit bids after the statement released by the IBF on May 14.

What happens if Canelo refuses to fight William Scull?
The IBF is in the habit of stripping boxers who do not attend mandatory fights of their belts, a few weeks ago it applied a heavy hand to Terence Crawford for not making the defense against Jaron Ennis for the welterweight title, even in 2019 Canelo already suffered for not scheduling a fight against Sergiy Derevyanchenko.

Canelo won the IBF super middleweight belt by knocking out Caleb Plant in November 2021, which put him in a mandatory defense situation for August 2022, but being in constant activity, he had not been given an official order until now that they want him to face Scull, who besides being the number one ranked, is undefeated in his 22 fights as a professional, with 9 knockouts.
