In the wrestling world, where giants and legends are often mentioned in the same breath, Cody Rhodes’ recent strides in WWE have sparked notable comparisons. Former wrestling executive Eric Bischoff recently added his voice to those drawing parallels between Rhodes and some of wrestling’s all-time greats. Speaking on his show “Wise Choices,” Bischoff offered a unique perspective on Rhodes’ current trajectory in WWE.
“Cody Rhodes is as close to that traditional ultra babyface character that we have seen in a long time, probably since John Cena,” Bischoff commented enthusiastically. He elaborated that Rhodes, much like Cena in his prime, embodies the quintessential hero persona, but with an even more authentic approach.
While Cena famously transformed from a rapper gimmick to a revered WWE figure, Bischoff points out that this transition was not entirely smooth, hinting that it did not fully represent Cena’s true character. “That didn’t really feel like the real John Cena,” Bischoff reflected on Cena’s early WWE days.
Despite the success, Cena’s persona as the ultimate good guy wasn’t always well-received by fans, who sometimes grew weary of his unflappable character. Bischoff sees a similar path for Rhodes but cautions that maintaining such a pristine image could lead to fan fatigue. “I think when you have that pure as the driven snow babyface that Cody is representing now, there is a chance that some people will tire of it,” he said, suggesting that Rhodes might need to “get an edge” to sustain fan interest.
As Rhodes continues to shape his legacy, comparisons to legends like Cena will surely provide both pressures and high expectations.
Yet, for now, Rhodes is carving out his own chapter in WWE history, one that might just see him ascend to the pantheon of wrestling greats.
